Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas that is easy to breathe. It has been a trusted method of sedation in dentistry for many years due to its safety and effectiveness. When used, patients receive a mixture of 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide. This allows patients to remain in control of their bodily functions while breathing naturally on their own.
While under nitrous oxide sedation, you may experience mild amnesia and may even fall asleep, forgetting parts of your appointment once it’s over. Despite this, you will remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure.
Advantages of Nitrous Oxide Sedation:
- The depth of sedation can be adjusted at any time, allowing for precise control during the procedure.
- There are no lingering aftereffects, such as a “hangover.”
- Inhalation sedation is safe, with no adverse effects on your heart, lungs, or other organs.
- It is highly effective at minimizing gag reflex, making procedures more comfortable.
- Nitrous oxide acts quickly, reaching the brain within 20 seconds, and begins to produce its relaxing and pain-relieving effects in as little as 2-3 minutes.
When Nitrous Oxide May Not Be Suitable: Nitrous oxide should generally be avoided if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or have certain respiratory conditions such as emphysema, chest issues, or multiple sclerosis. If you’re experiencing a cold or other breathing difficulties, nitrous oxide may not be recommended.
If you’re unsure about using nitrous oxide, you can ask your dentist for a “5-minute trial” to see how it affects you before deciding whether to proceed with this form of sedation.
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option for many patients, allowing for a more relaxed, comfortable dental experience. If you have any concerns or questions, do not hesitate to discuss them with Dr. Gadler.
