Solutions for Overcoming Dental Fear

Dental Anxiety is Not Uncommon

In fact, studies show that up to 75% of Americans experience some level of dental-related fear, with 20% avoiding dental care because of it. If you feel anxious about dental procedures, rest assured that making you feel comfortable and safe at our office is our top priority.

Dental Anxiety vs. Dental Phobia

Dental anxiety and dental phobia can manifest in various ways, and individual fears differ from person to person. Dental anxiety tends to be mild to moderate, often involving general worry or apprehension about an upcoming appointment. On the other hand, dental phobia is more intense and characterized by an overwhelming, irrational fear that may cause some people to avoid care altogether.

We Can Help!

Whatever your individual level of anxiety may be, our office is committed to making sure that your visit is as comfortable, quick and stress-free as possible. There are many solutions for managing dental anxiety, and we are here to help.

Effective ways to ease anxiety in the dental office:

  • Communication:
Sharing your concerns with us is the first step. Often, simply providing you with accurate information about your procedure can help alleviate stress. We will keep you informed every step of the way, ensuring you understand what’s happening and why it’s necessary.
  • Calming Techniques:
Many patients find controlled breathing or distraction techniques, like focusing on something specific, helpful in reducing anxiety during treatment.
  • Listening to Music:
With most procedures, the use of personal headphones and music is allowed. This is a great way to relax and pass time during treatment.
  • Nitrous Oxide:
Depending on the nature of your procedure, various types of sedation may be available to you including Nitrous Oxide Inhalation Sedation Anesthesia.
  • Taking Breaks:
If you need a break during your treatment, simply signal with your left hand. We’re happy to pause and give you a moment to relax.
  • Intravenous Sedation or General Anesthesia is also available to most patients as long as the patient has had nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours and a driver (Age 18 or over) is present (friend or family – not taxi, bus, Uber or mass transit) who will drive the patient home and stay with them for several hours after the procedure.
